I have the Y700 Touch-15ISK Laptop variant of this laptop.
I noticed FPS degradation in game and Investigated. The following are my results and interpretations. They are not pertinent to older games or games which do not heavily stress CPU and GPU simultaneously.
I used NVIDIA Inspector to monitor temperature, voltage, and frequency. MSI afterburner was used to monitor FPS in game. 5-7 minutes into a particularly taxing game, the GPU temperature would hit 68C and GPU performance would scale back ~170 MHz. During stress testing, if GPU temperature is sustained over 65C the CPU disables turbo boost to bring temps back within spec. I doubt this happens during games.
The throttling is of course more evident with overclocking. The Y700-15isk supports OC’ing the GPU with NVIDIA inspector by 135 MHz and around 400 MHz on memory. I recommend only using a 220 MHz OC for memory (diminishing returns of about 0.5~fps after that). However, oddly enough, overclocking did mitigate some of the throttling.
The following graphs chart GPU performance over time during Heaven Benchmark. First link is stock, second is overclocked.
CPU and GPU cooling is phenomenal in 99% of situations. This will not affect anything but the most taxing games that rely heavily on the CPU and GPU. Overall, not a big deal.

The only program which lets you have any semblance of control over fan speed on the Lenovo y700 is Ideafan.exe 1.5. I used it to gauge max speed of the internal fans. Logically, when GPU temperatures approach 65-68C fans should be operating at 100% to prevent the throttling. This is not the case. Elite proxy switcher pro. This never happens when it matters because the GPU throttles to keep temperatures low.
The throttle threshold set on the GPU is abnormally low. NVIDIA rated this graphics card’s maximum temperature in the 90’s. The two above changes would allow maximum performance even in GPU overclock scenarios in the most taxing games.
If you have an interest in optimizing your hardware for the best performance then I urge you to contact Lenovo and request these changes. In the meantime, here are some modifications which can help compensate for Lenovo’s poor judgement:
Undervolt:
I no longer recommend using Intel XTU. It is resource intensive compared to Throttlestop.
Throttlestop has some tricks that are not immediately evident. If you need help Undervolting and setting up proper profiles, leave a note below or a message and I’ll do my best to make a guide. I shaved 15C off my max CPU temperature. Definitely Helps.
Hardware Mod: VOIDS WARRANTY
The grill for the air intake has needlessly wide plastic cross sections on the inside to hold the air filter in place. Users can carefully use a Dremel to prune down some of these fixtures or remove some completely. The air filter is also needlessly restrictive. I do not recommend removing it all together but instead purchasing one with better airflow online and replacing it. Use a sturdy dry removable adhesive around its edges to keep it in place if you removed some of the plastic to allow for better air flow.
Cooling Pad:
Limited results. Took off only about 1C for me.

o CPU temperature can reach around 90C+ with CPU rendering 4k video at 60fps in MPC-HC.
o Using Prime95 SMALL FTS past version 2.66 or any stress test software which leverages the AVX2 instruction set can also get you to those temps. These tests are exceedingly unrealistic and I don’t recommend using them to gauge system stability. Use version 2.66 or some other highly regarded testing software.
Under normal use scenarios and gaming, I have never seen CPU surpass 78C *Do not use MSI afterburner for anything but monitoring in game FPS. It doesn’t report correctly on some sensors.
