Apr 18, 2016  Lifecam HD-3000 appropriate drivers & software utility for Windows 10 in Drivers and Hardware I have a LifeCam HD-3000 webcam, the webcam works just fine, however, I can not get the software suite it normally comes with to work. Microsoft LifeCam Studio 1080p HD Driver download and Review The 1080p web cam party is simply starting, Logitech kicking things off with the $99 C910 previously this year, and now points are warming up with Microsoft making its look.

I'm using DirectShowNet in C#. I've been developing an application to work with webcams to display video, change resolution, and take pictures (either Still pin or from the Capture stream). I've been testing it on 2 different machines (Win 7 64-bit & Win 8 64-bit) and with the internal webcams on those machines (they are laptops) and 2 other webcams, Logitech C920 and Microsoft LifeCam Studio.

One day, the LifeCam Studio stopped working on my Win 8 machine. Using GraphEditPlus, checking the VideoFormats for the Capture pin, I notice that, mysteriously, the RGB24 formats are no longer listed. I have written my application to use only 24-bit color format. Only YUY2 16-bit formats are listed. If I check the same webcam on my Win 7 machine, I see both the YUY2 and the RGB24 formats being listed. Previously, my Win 8 machine did list both of these formats.

The question is, what could cause DirectShow to change the list of VideoFormats for the Capture pin? So far, I've noticed that changing driver versions makes a huge difference for webcams in what pins they support, but I haven't seen them change video formats like this. As far as I know, I have not updated the drivers for the webcam on either machine.

Here are the driver versions for both machines.

I figured out how to get the formats back. I went into device manager and found the 'Microsoft LifeCam Studio' device. I uninstalled it and hit the checkbox to 'Also delete the driver for this device'. After that, I refreshed device manager, and when the device was found, it had the name 'Microsoft® LifeCam Studio(TM)', but then changed to 'Microsoft LifeCam Studio'. That made me realize that it automatically updated the driver.

As you notice in my Win 8 screenshot above, the button 'Roll Back Driver' is enabled. This means that the driver was updated at some point. I proceeded to roll back the driver, which changed the name back to 'Microsoft® LifeCam Studio(TM)'.

Now, in GraphEditPlus, the device lists YUY2, MJPG (24-bit), and M420 (12-bit) video formats for the Capture pin. This seems to be what I have had in the past. It works properly with my application now since a 24-bit format is available.

Overall, Microsoft removed some of the DirectShow functionality of the device when they made the Windows 8 driver. This old driver is from 2006 and works fantastically with Windows 8. I'm assuming it is one built into the OS that was carryover from old Windows OS's.

Here is a screenshot of the working driver for others that would like more video formats available for the LifeCam Studio in Windows 8.

Lifecam Studio Driver
$99.99
  • Pros

Sharp, crisp images and video recording. Most natural color balance we've seen from a webcam. Built-in TrueColor and automatic light correction works well in less-than-optimal environments. Warm vocal reproduction. Flexible 360-degree mount includes tripod thread.

  • Cons

Mono mic lacks noise suppression. Video recording maxes out at 720p and 15 frames per second without extra software. Buggy live effects.

  • Bottom Line

The Microsoft LifeCam Studio is a sweet upgrade from a built-in VGA webcam, and good enough for high-definition Internet video chats and even home movies.

Microsoft's latest webcam, the LifeCam Studio ($99.99 list), offers quality video recording and Internet video chats at a reasonable price. It's a Best Buy exclusive, available now at BestBuy.com and in Best Buy retail stores in October. The LifeCam Studio features a 1080p-capable sensor, an improved design, a flexible mount, and a steady picture that looks natural in a variety of environments. There are still a few hidden gotchas, but the LifeCam Studio's improvements are enough to steal our Editors' Choice award from the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910 ($99.99, ).

Design, Lens, and Setup
Like the prior, almost-all-black Microsoft LifeCam Cinema ($79.95, ), the LifeCam Studio is a beauty. It measures 4.5 by 1.6 by 2.4 inches (HWD), and is a mix of silver and black aluminum, with a sleek, cannon-shaped design. A high-precision glass element lens covers a new 1080p-capable, auto-focus sensor. It brings in more light than the prior model and is optimized for working well in lower-light environments. Microsoft said the goal was for users to avoid having to crank the lights for video chats. In addition, a small cap extends out from over the sensor; this way straight overhead light doesn't hit the sensor and compromise the image. The LifeCam Studio also includes a larger, higher-fidelity microphone than before.

As before, the flexible, rubberized mount can sit atop a desktop or laptop lid without marring the frame. I had no problem mounting the LifeCam Cinema on top of a 23-inch Asus monitor and an 18.4-inch Toshiba laptop. Microsoft improved the mount in two ways, though. It now includes a separate 360-degree joint for rotating the camera, and a new tripod thread in the bottom of the mount lets you position the unit on a portable stand. Between those two improvements, you can, say, show a drawing to a colleague, or conduct a chat in the middle of a living room with the family sitting around.

Setting up the built-in software took just a few minutes. Unlike with Logitech's C910, you can at least use a common IM program for HD video chats: Windows Live Messenger 2011 Beta (more on that below). Microsoft's included software doesn't do much aside from taking snapshots and recording video files. It does offer effects for distorting the live image, making it look like you're wearing a costume or a halo of stars, and other similar fun ideas. Unfortunately, keeping it all accurate at HD resolution proved too much for the built-in software. Almost without fail, the effects fell out of sync, and sometimes by several seconds, even on a quad-core Windows 7 PC with an ATI Radeon HD 5870 video card.

Video, Sound, and Conclusions
That said, the LifeCam Studio includes some enhancements that improve the live picture. TrueColor works by tracking your facial movements; this way the unit can change the exposure to compensate for a bright spotlight near the seating position. In practice, this worked really well. Live images from the LifeCam Studio looked closer to what you'd expect from a camcorder like the Flip UltraHD ($179.99, ), and less like the over-exposed, flat-looking images you'll typically see through a webcam, no matter how I angled a nearby desk lamp.

Microsoft claims to have increased the maximum video recording rate compared with the previous LifeCam. The highest resolution setting is still 1280-by-720, but the company said in an interview that the maximum frame rate is now 30 frames per second. Unfortunately, that's still not achievable at HD resolution with the built-in software, which maxes out at 15 frames per second. It's also dependent on how bright the recording environment is. If the lighting is relatively dim, that means the sensor will have to bring in more light to get each frame correct. Consequently, the frame rate will be lower.

The new microphone does sound better than before. A series of tests showed a well-rounded vocal reproduction that was a bit warmer than the tinnier audio I heard from the LifeCam Cinema. However, the LifeCam Studio's mic is still mono, and it still lacks noise cancellation. In a series of tests, an office fan at various settings came through loud and clear in the recordings. Microsoft says the LifeCam Studio lacks noise reduction because it tends to distort the voices of anyone not immediately in front of the mic. That may be true, but why not include it anyway with a toggle switch in the software?

While the LifeCam Studio is optimized to conduct 720p HD Internet chats with the new Windows Live Messenger 2011 Beta, it also works in VGA mode (or less) with Skype, AIM, and Yahoo, among other services. In fact, unless you can round up another Live Messenger 2011 buddy and have an ultra-fast broadband connection, it's likely that most of your chats won't be as sharp or as smooth as what the LifeCam Studio is capable of. The Live Messenger integration is robust, though; for example, you can tap the Call button to start a video call, and it will pop up video-enabled contacts. You can also record video with one click and submit it to Windows Live Movie Maker, which lets you edit the video before transferring it to YouTube or Facebook.

The Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910 may still be better for some buyers, thanks to its stereo mics and built-in noise cancellation. But the Microsoft LifeCam Studio's recorded video looks sharper at an identical 1280-by-720-pixel setting, and also lacks the C910's compression artifacts when recording video. It's almost a toss-up as to which one handles sub-optimal environments better. Both compensate well for poor lighting, although the LifeCam Studio has a slight edge in color accuracy and an overall natural appearance. All told, the LifeCam Studio is an excellent buy.
